Martin A. Giese

Research Interests:

  • Neural and NN models of high-level vision (social perception)
  • Neural mechanisms of motion, action, and social perception (physiology, psychophysics)
  • Movement analysis and computational modelling of the motor system
  • Technical applications related to movement disorders and psychiatric diseases
  • Mechanisms of non-invasive neural stimulation

 Short CV:

M. Giese studied Electrical Engineering and Psychology at Ruhr University in Bochum. Following a Postdoc position at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Science at M.I.T., he founded the Boston Research Laboratory for Honda Americas in 2000. From 2001 to 2007, he headed a Junior Research Group at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH) at the University of Tübingen. He completed his habilitation at the Department of Informatics at the University of Ulm in 2006. From 2007 to 2008, he held the position of Senior Lecturer at the Department of Psychology at the University of Wales, Bangor. Since 2008 and continuing to the present, he has been heading of the Section for Computational Sensomotorics at the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and the HIH. His scientific interests are neuroscience and related technical applications. The main topic of his laboratory are the perception and control of complex body motion, neural modelling, and technical and clinical application of learning-based representations for then synthesis and analysis of body movement, and mechanisms of non-invasive brain stimulation. M. Giese has founded the Master's track 'Neural Information Processing' at the Graduate Training Centre for Neuroscience in Tübingen. He has served as Associated Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Applied Perception. He is Associate Editor of Frontiers in Computational Neurosciences and Cognitive Neurodynamics. Furthermore, he serves as the Co-Speaker for the Hertie Network of Excellence in Clinical Neuroscience (site Tübingen) and the Else Kröner-Fresenius Graduate College (EKFS) in Clinical Brain: Artificial Intelligence in Brain Science. Since 2022, he has also been the spokesperson for Research Area N3 of the HIH, which focuses on Neurohabilitation, Neuroprosthetics, and Neurotechnology. He is a member of the steering board of the Competence Center of Biointelligence (e.V.) founded by the Fraunhofer IPA (Stuttgart), and he is a liaison professor of the German National Merit Foundation.

Kurzlebenslauf:
